Me and My Pitts
I live in Jericho, VT and I have loved Pitbulls and all dogs since I can remember. I have grown up around dogs and got my first two Pitbulls at the same time when I was 20yrs old. They were brothers and I named one, which was brindle, Bugsy and the other Bullet. This is when I realized how great of a family dog this breed really was. My son was 1years old and when I put him down to sleep in his crib, Bugsy would literally lay in the doorway and protected my son as he slept. The dog naturally took on this protective nurturing role. Wherever my son was, Bugsy was. Bullet was a daddy's boy and went with me everywhere! It has been 13 years since then and unfortunately Bugsy isn't with us anymore and Bullet boy is getting old but he is still loyal as ever. As I was moving around trying to settle into a place of my own I had to leave Bullet to live at my mother's home. He still saw Dad all the time but he grew to be a real companion for my mom. My father was ill and when he passed, I knew I couldn't take this dog back, away from my mother. They love each other. So, within the last year I opened my home to a beautiful Red nose Pitt. I named him Gunner and right now he is 10mos. old. His birthday is April 20th 2006. I have an album with his pictures from growing up over the past 10mos. I hope his pictures just add to the proof that these animals are the kindest, most warm hearted animals, that truly just want to please their owner.

When I got my newest Pitt I realized just how bad the stereotypes were about Pitts. Every time I told someone his breed they asked questions like..."Oh, is he aggressive yet?" or they would tell their dog "Watch out, that dog will beat you down when he grows up." I felt like I really couldn't tell one person without some sort of negative reaction. People would tell me to be careful when my dog turns 1yr old because that is when Pitts show their innate aggression. I realized that people really thought that this aggression that they had heard of was completely natural within the breed and it was an inevitable fate. I hope that I can spread awareness by bringing my Pitt to the hospital as a therapy dog. I love telling people he is a Pitt when he is the best behaved dog at the dog park at only 10mos old. So I join the fight to raise awareness and I plan to do so every chance I get.
